November 2010- Don’t Let Falls Get You Down: Fall Prevention  -  While the risk of falling and of being seriously injured in a fall increases with age, older adults are not falling because they are old. In fact, falls are not an inevitable part of aging. For example, some older adults may be at increased risk of falling due to a neurological disorder or the coexistence of two or more diseases that cause disturbances in gait, posture, and equilibrium. Others fall due to a number of preventable risk factors including lack of exercise, unsafe home environments, vision problems, and medication usage (CDC, 2009). By addressing these risk factors, a person can lower his/her chance of falling, or prevent a fall from occurring.  Elizabeth Creed, Marion County FCS agent presenting this session.
