Family and Consumer Sciences Educational Lessons are presented each month, August through April. These lessons are presented with Madison County Extension Homemaker Lesson Leaders in mind, but everyone is invited to attend, even if you are not a member of Madison County Extension Homemakers. All lessons will be held at the Madison County Extension Education Center, 230 Duncannon Lane, Richmond. Please call 859-623-4072 to register!
Here is a sampling of Leader Lessons for 2012-2013!
Plan, Cook, Freeze - Thursday, August 30, 1 pm and 6:30 pm
Good management skills will help participate prepare and serve home-cooked nutritious meals. “Plan, Cook, Freeze” will aid participants in successfully identifying “make-ahead meals” that will reduce dependence on commercially prepared convenience and fast foods.
Nourish Your Joints - Monday, September 17, 1 pm and 6:30 pm
Most of us experience some joint stiffness during seasonal changes. However, degenerative diseases such as arthritis can inhibit daily activities. Help keep your joints viable with tips for staying fit. Learn about the relationships of nutrition and fitness to bone and joint health through hands on activities and material. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, common supplements and alternative treatments will be discussed.
Bread Baking Basics - Monday, October 29, 1 pm and 6:30 pm
Learn what’s new in baking bread – everything from the latest equipment to essential ingredients. This program will focus on basic bread making skills for the novice as well as value baking ideas for the experienced cook. Discover creative ideas for holiday baking and yummy gift-giving as well as ways to supplement family meals and save dollars. This has the potential to encourage future generations of home bakers.
Take the Age Out of Your Dress - Monday, Nov 26, 1 pm and 6:30 pm
Come learn about styling to make you look your best! Don’t let trends intimidate you. Take the age out of your dressing.
Keys to Embracing Aging - Tuesday, January 29, 1 pm and 6:30 pm
Aging is an inevitable and unavoidable process that brings on many changes as a person progresses from childhood to adulthood. The way in which you take care of yourself through the years both physically and mentally will impact the ways in which you enter your later years. With aging comes new experiences, knowledge, wisdom and a greater ability to engineer a positive approach to the aging process. The Keys to Embracing Age program is an interactive workshop that highlights 12 keys aimed at helping you to grow old gracefully, successfully and with increased longevity. Keys to Embracing Age will influence physical health, financial security, productivity, independence, optimism, health, creativity, and social activity.
How to Shop in your Closet - Monday, February 25, 1 pm ONLY!
Come learn about “Upcycling” – camouflaging and repurposing your current wardrobe and accessories to create new fashionable items for your wardrobe on a budget.
Decorating on A Dime - Monday, March 25, 1 pm ONLY!
Are you wanting a new look in your home without having to move or spending lots of money that you don’t have? Decorating on a budget involves, creativity, do-it yourself skills and a spirit of adventure all of which will be taught in this class. We will also focus on cost effective ways to give your home a fresh face lift and new decorating ideas that you may not be familiar with!
Plate It Up The Healthy Way - Tuesday, April 30, 1 pm and 6:30 pm
Learn more about eating healthy and purchasing local grown foods. This lesson includes recipes, nutrition information, how to best utilize your farmers market and information about the Plate It Up KY proud program. The Plate It Up program is a joint effort between Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences Agents and Food Science Students at the University of Kentucky. This program redevelops recipes using Kentucky commodities and makes them not only healthier but very tasty. Participants will receive recipes year round for produce and meats that are grown and can be purchased locally. The lesson will include materials from www.choosemyplate.com.
