Program Plan:

Educate, promote, and preserve the cultural heritage of Southern Appalachia

Situation:

Letcher County is home to a distinct American Culture, rooted deep in the hills and "hollers" of our Southern Appalachian mountains. Many people throughout our community have lost touch with our maountain heritage. The Letcher County Cooperative Extension Council identified this ussue as a top priority during the listening sessions conducted in 2010.



SEEC:

- Youth and Adults appreciate their mountain heritage and show pride in the community in which they were raised.
- Clients use primitive folk craft techniques to create business opportunities.
- County leaders promote the historical significance and the natural beauty of the area to attract tourism.



Practices:

- Youth will feel proud of their heritage when leaving the region.
- Individuals will practice folklife skills such as weaving, basketmaking, quilting, story-telling, traditional music, etc.



KOSA:

- Clients gain knowledge of primitive folk craft techniques
- Youth and Adults will understand the importance of portraying themselves in a positive manner to decrease the typical sterotype of appalachia.
- Youth and Adults will want to share their knowledge of Appalachia, changing the mind set of today's public.



Impact Indicators:

Outcome: Individuals will gain knowledge of the primitive techniques of basket making, story-telling, qulting, etc.
Indicator: Individuals utilizing primitive folk life techniques
Method:Program participation, Oral surveys, Quilt Show, Cultural Arts Exhibits, 4-H Projects

Situation:

The natural beauty of Letcher County with Pine Mountain and the Trail being developed along it, Bad Branch Falls, Lilley Cornett Woods, Fish Pond Lake, Raven Rock, and our rich cultural and craft heritage have great potential to improve the local economy if developed properly.


SEEC:

Letcher County will have increased income from tourism, through development, promotion and social marketing of work of local artisans, through the Quilt Heritage Project,and use of local tourist attractions and destinations. Access to local attractions will be improved.
New tourism-related businesses will locate/open in Letcher County.


Practices:

Letcher County citizens, organizations and businesses will show support of locally owned establishments through a "buy at home" policy when possible and use of local tourist facilities. The Quilt Heritage Project ("Barn Quilts") is being done to promote the cultural heritage and tourism in the County.

Measures will be taken to insure,protect and enhance natural settings, with the support of volunteers.


KOSA:

Leaders will be supportive of existing tourism-related organizations.

Local citizens will see how the natural scenic beauty here can attract tourists and take ownership and pride in preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of Letcher County.


Impact Indicators:

Outcome: Increased marketability of natural attractions and tourism-related businesses.
Indicator: Increase in visits and in amount of sales.
Method: Surveys and questionnaires; state tourism figures
Timeline: : One year; Pine Mt. Trail - monthly/bi-monthly

  Activity: Further development of Pine Mountain Trail and State Park with good visitor access; continue to mentor Pine Mountain-Letcher County Craft Co-Op; work with other community and economic development groups and agencies.

 Audience: Youth

  Activity: County Kid's Day Events and Christmas in the Park
  Content or Curriculum: Participation with other county organizations, agencies, and businesses to provide school supplies and activities for children of the county

Pine Mountain Trail State Park funds; Pine Mountain Trail Funds; Rotary Club Funds; Volunteer groups spending locally; Americorps & American Hiking Society Funds. Sierra Club, independant college groups, Alternative Spring Breaks, and other public and private funds.
