Dreams

Dreams of a teenage girl
Are the best dreams of her life,
There's so much she wants to do
Before she settles down as a wife.

She dreams of becoming successful
Maybe of having a business of her own,
But there's so much she has to do
Before she can leave home.

Her dreams aren't so different
Than what her mother may have had
And when some of those dreams don't come true
It may leave her a little sad.

But she'll go on dreaming
Because that's what teenage girls do,
And if she doesn't give up
Some of those dreams may come true.

An Ode to Tea

I like tea as sweet as can be.
       I like tea sometimes lemony.
I like tea warm and brown,
If I don't have it, I will frown.
I like tea sometimes with ice
that will make it twice as nice.
I like tea, it's my favorite drink
I wouldn't care if it was pink.
I like tea even with mint
I has a very lovely scent.
I like tea, can you tell?
       I like tea very well.

  RULES:

Don’t forget to submit your 4-H Poetry entry by the deadline.  You may turn in your poem at the Extension Office or during your school club meeting.  Only one poem per person is permitted, so pick out your best work.

The length of your poem will depend on your age division.  Junior 4-Hers (ages 9-13 as of Jan. 1, 2008) write poems that are 3 to 25 lines.  Senior 4-Hers (ages 14-18 as of Jan. 1, 2008) should submit poems that are 3 to 28 lines.  Please note:  Haikus are one sentence, 17 syllables on 3 lines—5, 7, 5.  All poems must be the original work of the 4-Her.  Poems from other sources will not be accepted.  Poems must be titled and can be on any subject.  Poems must never have been published or submitted to another agency.

The top 12 poems from LaRue County will advance to the District Contest.  These poems will be published in the district poetry book.  One copy will be given to each winner.  Poems will be evaluated on the following four categories:

I. GENERAL - 10%

Suitable for age.  Work is obviously the work of the 4-Her.  Meets basic contest standards: titled, correct length.

II. POETICAL DEVICES - 30%

Rhyme-Is it appropriate?  Does it contribute rather than draw attention to itself.  If poem does not have end rhyme, does this seem effective, natural appropriate?  Rhythm.  Stanza Format - follows a pattern.  Figures of speech - metaphor, simile, alliteration.  Imagery.

III. ORIGINALITY AND EXPRESSION -  50%

Choice of topic-interesting and catches the attention of the reader, leaves room for reader’s imagination and interpretation.  Vocabulary Control - word selection, vivid adjectives, active verbs.  Fluency - moves along smoothly.  Continuity - seems to begin and end with some sense of direction.  Sentences make sense together.

IV. MECHANICS - 10%

Punctuation.  Spelling. Capitalization.  Correct word choice.

Good luck with your poems.  If you have any questions or would like to see a score sheet used for judging, please contact 4-H Agent, Misty Wilmoth at the Extension Office (358-3401).
