Bobby McDowell Award of Excellence
The LaRue County Extension Council Award of Excellence was established and first awarded in 1985 to recognize individuals, families, family businesses, civic or service organizations which have made significant contributions to LaRue County in service, participation or leadership through Extension programs and/or the business sector. In 1991 it  was renamed the Bobby McDowell Award of Excellence in memory, and to honor, dedicated Extension leader Bobby McDowell. Bobby, as many of you will remember, died of heart failure as a young adult.

The Bobby McDowell Award for Excellence is presented each year by the LaRue County Cooperative Extension Council. This award recognizes those who have made significant contributions to LaRue County.

This year's recipient is being recognized for a significant contribution to community development. community development is economic development. The contributions we are recognizing this year are recent. However, they are already benefiting the residents of LaRue County, and will continue to do so for decade to come.

The Bobby McDowell Award this year is being presented to a group. This group was able to accomplish what it has because it is an effective team.  This team generated considerable financial support for their projects through successful grant writing. They planned and successfully implemented the improvements we see on the square, new landscaping, new lighting, new construction. The end result is a harmonious, well planned and practical improvement to downtown Hodgenville.

This team has improved the quality of life and triggered additional investment and economic development for LaRue County. The downtown is being revitalized. For example, most of us enjoy eating. Not too many years ago, the number of good clean restaurants in downtown Hodgenville was few in number. Today there are at least five.

It is a pleasure to drive through downtown Hodgenville on our new roundabout. We have all noticed the spruced up buildings in the downtown area and several new businesses. Additional investments and business development will follow because the efforts of this group clearly show that the citizens of our community believe in the community and take pride in it.

"Thanks"
to the Crosstown Homemakers for the wonderful meal.

Extension Leadership
The Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service is dependent upon the broad-based participation of local citizens. That involvement is accomplished through the Extension advisory council system. The Extension Council is an organized body of volunteer leaders that counsels with Extension agents in the identification of local problems and issues, assists in program implementation, participates in determining program success, and communicates program accomplishments and funding needs to decision makers.

Educational programs of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability, or national origin.
