4-H/Youth Development

The 4-H/Youth Development program creates opportunities and supportive environments for youth and adults to become capable, competent and caring citizens. The emphasis is on "hands-on" learning that focuses on the youth's area of interest. Programs are conducted with the help of parents, adult volunteer leaders and professional staff who organize educational experiences. Youth participate in organized 4-H clubs, special interest and project groups, 4-H school enrichment programs, 4-H camp and other special activities.

Broughton Named to State 4-H Teen Council

Amanda Rai Broughton, daughter of Lonley and Judy Broughton, has recently been named to the 2007-08 Kentucky State 4-H Teen Council.  Amanda has been involved in 4-H for the past 7 years, attending 4-H camp as a camper and teen leader.  She has also been involved in the Livestock Skillathon contest, poultry judging, and in the after-school 4-H Cooking Club.  She recently won “Category Champion” at the KY State Fair in cooking, for her Baklava, a traditional Greek dessert.  The 4-H State Teen Council is the premiere 4-H Teen Leadership Program in Kentucky, with only 7 youths selected per district, with a total of no more than 49 members at one time.  Youths are selected at district level based on a written essay, experience, and proven commitment to the 4-H Program.  Below is an excerpt from her essay, entitled, “What 4-H Means to Me…”

If I sat down and tried to count the number of friends I’ve made through 4-H over the years, I am sure I could not come close to an actual number.  The friends you make with 4-H are like no other – they are great friends and are always there for you.  One very close friend I have made with 4-H is my agent, Melanie.  Without her, I would not be in half the 4-H activities, and do half the things I do, today!

Traveling with 4-H is amazing!  With 4-H, you get to go to all the different counties in Kentucky for different meetings and programs.  I could not tell you how many counties I have traveled to with 4-H; however, I can tell you this – without 4-H, I would never have traveled to these many counties and had all the wonderful experiences I’ve had the past few years…..4-H has so many programs to choose from- there’s a program for everyone!  I think that is wonderful, because it gives anyone a chance to join and enjoy 4-H.  Also, I’ve discovered that 4-H can help me achieve my dream of going to college, as it gives me lots of real-life educational experiences to prepare me to be successful as an adult.  And, yes, it also looks great on college applications!

4-H is so much more to me than camps, crafts and clubs!  Even though these are all important in helping people to grow, 4-H is about making new friends, having new experiences, learning how to be responsible and making life-long memories, that I PROMISE, you will NEVER forget!  So, what does 4-H mean to me – more than I could ever explain, even with one million words!

The Knox County Extension Service would like to wish Amanda Broughton, “Congratulations” on her appointment to the KY STC – good luck and best wishes in all your endeavors!  For more information about Knox County 4-H programs, please contact Melanie Mays, 4-H Agent, at 606-546-3447 or mpmays@uky.edu.
