| Message from President, Nancy Hunt | |
|
Thank you for your support and electing me as your
KEAFCS president. I always look up to those who hold leadership roles in
our association because it takes time and that is a valuable commodity to
all Extension Agents. Learning more about our organization and the
interaction with peers and administrators is truly uplifting. This
experience reminds me of when I took a sabbatical 17 years ago. I don’t
miss the classes, but the change in routine and the chance to reflect on
things differently was something I had never experienced in my
professional life. We seem to get in a certain routine and when something
changes, like taking on new responsibilities; it forces us to look at
things in a different manner. There are only so many hours in a day, so
we must decide what is really important. I just reread this last sentence
and laughed because it is after 5 p.m., and I am the only one left in the
office so you can see what my priorities are! Anyway, I have been busy
representing the association at the KEHA Board meeting, JCEP, JCEP
Leadership Workshop in Orlando and PILD in Washington, D.C. I really
appreciate Edith Lovett representing KEAFCS at the State Extension Council
meeting when neither Lora Lee nor I were available. I really hope many of
you are planning to attend Galaxy III (2008 NEAFCS National Meeting) in
Indianapolis since it is so close to home and is always beneficial to our
members. Jennifer Bridge has agreed to make the arrangements for our
State’s Night Out. In 2009, we’ll be meeting in Birmingham and Kentucky
has been asked to assist since it is in the Southern Region. Lora Lee
Frazier Howard has taken on the task of finding 1,500 free or inexpensive
items representing something in Kentucky or FCS to give out on the day
Kentucky is responsible for the General Store (Hospitality Area). I am
pleased with the enthusiasm of the individuals on our state board and for
the first time we have two national officers serving, too. I extend a
special thank you to everyone who agreed to serve as a 2009 committee
chair. I look forward to the rest of my term and hope that I live up to
the trust that you have in me. My philosophy for this year will follow a
quote from Theodore Roosevelt which I have taken the liberty of changing
to fit our situation…The
best |

It was with great delight that I learned the news that Annie Mae Kingston will be taking over the KEAFCS Newsletter and Website! Because I am going to be on sabbatical beginning in July - she has agreed to take on the final issue of 2008. Please send all your information to Annie Mae for the Fall issue of the newsletter. This has been a wonderful learning experience, although I whole-heartedly thank Nancy Hunt for having the foresight to realize that it is a position that does need to be changed periodically. |

The Louisville Area FCS Agents are happy to welcome Martha deCampos to her new position as a Jefferson County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences. Jane Proctor, Trimble County FCS Agent, completed her Masters in Community and Leadership Development from the University of Kentucky on February 26, 2008. The Louisville Area FCS Agents met on April 4 at the Hawkes Gallery for a blown glass demonstration and discussion of the many uses of glass in Interior Design. Then we learned about food security as we toured the Gordon Food Service Distribution Center in Shepherdsville. This distribution center runs 10 miles of conveyer belts as people and computers sort and ship food orders to restaurants and institutions such as schools and prisons. The center services at least three states. |

District 6 is currently experiencing an unprecedented high number of vacancies. With the departures of Monroe County FCS Agent, Valerie Hudson and Henderson County FCS Agent, Jan Dougan and the retirement of Myra Braden, Webster County FCS Agent, we currently have a total of four vacancies in the district. Valerie is the new director of the Monroe County Health Department and Jan accepted a position with Indiana Extension in her home county. In January, the agents of the district gathered together at Barren River State Park for a professional development retreat. This retreat gave us an opportunity to explore different ways we can work together to serve the people of our district. This year we recognized Jan Dougan as an outstanding agent in the district who exemplifies strong leadership characteristics. We were joined by our District Director, David Herbst for an interactive discussion on the state of Extension. |
