 KEAFCS Newsletter - Fall 2007

Message from President, Lora Lee Frazier Howard

Our State Meeting will be here December 4th – 6th in Lexington at the Holiday Inn North.  The In-Service will be on December 4th before the Association Meeting.  Nancy Hunt has worked hard and diligently to provide us with an excellent meeting in Lexington .  I hope you plan on attending.

We had 44 attend the National Meeting in Minnesota , three new members, several spouses, and Laura Stephenson.  This was the second largest attendance at the meeting from the Southern Region.

One item of business that will affect us in the next few months is that dues were raised $10.00.  This will allow an additional $2.00 to be contributed to the Awards Budget, bringing the total to $10.00.  Total dues to the National level will be $70.00.  The budget at the National level will still be a deficient budget for 2008 with the dues increase.  I don’t know any other professional organization that you will get so many benefits for the dues we pay.

Kentucky is very fortunate to have excellent leaders; this is never more evident than when you have two members elected to a National position.  Judy Hetterman was elected Southern Region Director and Debra Cotterill was elected Treasurer.  We congratulate these two agents for their leadership at the National level.  I’m sure they may be asking for our help or support.  I hope when they contact you, your response will be, “I’ll be glad to.”

We also had several agents receive awards at the National and Southern Region.  Congratulations to these agents.  We had one agent present at the National Meeting.  Pam York represented us well.  We have excellent programs presented at the state meeting.  I hope you decide to submit a proposal to present at the National meeting next year in Indiana .

The meetings for the next three years will be Indiana , Alabama , and Maine .  You are what makes this organization great.  It takes every member contributing to the best of their abilities to help keep our organization great.  Think of what you can do to help make us an even greater organization.  It takes all of us working together, and together we can make an impact.

I thank you for giving me this opportunity to serve you as your Association President.

This is your opportunity to market Family & Consumer Sciences Extension Association.  The t-shirts will be UK blue with white lettering.  Cost of the t-shirt is $7.00.  This is my cost.  You can purchase a t-shirt by completing the registration for the State Meeting and including it in with your registration.  Don’t forget to mark your size.   I will bring the t-shirts to the meeting to distribute at registration.  This is a fun way to support our association and profession.

A group of us had talked about purchasing and selling them at Galaxy next year for $10.00.  We could have a neutral color with white lettering.  Since National is asking States to contribute to the National Endowment Fund.  We thought the profit could go to the Endowment Fund.  We would need to discuss and vote on this at the Board Meeting.

Vice President for Professional Development- Nancy Hunt

Plan now to attend our KEAFCS Annual Meeting Dec. 4-6 at the Holiday Inn Lexington North.  The theme is “Bridging Scholarship & Outreach for a Promising Future”.

An exciting opportunity this year is the availability of scholarships to help cover the expense of registration for the in-service, association meeting and/or mileage.  A limited number of scholarships up to $500 per agent will be awarded.  The purpose is to assist those agents who have limited professional improvement funds or have a greater distance to the meeting which could keep them from attending.  Agents will need to fill out an application and have it signed by their District Director before it is returned. Watch your e-mail for the application and more details.

Dr. Ann Vail has been working with her staff to provide the first All-School Conference (FCS Extension, Faculty & Staff) for our in-service day.  The schedule will be shared at the district meetings this month.  One ticket for the evening event sponsored by UK Health Care will be provided to each full day in-service attendee.

TIAA - CREF will be providing counseling sessions during the meeting.  You will be provided by e-mail a link to schedule your appointment.  This was very popular last year so we have extended the days and more counselors will be available.  Sign up immediately if you are interested so we can make sure we get everyone in.

Our association meeting will include agent presentations, displays, board meetings, awards brunch and more.  On December 5, the KEAFCS Board meeting will begin at 8:00 AM, Officer Leadership sessions from 3:15-3:45 PM and from 4:00 - 4:45 PM, KEAFCS will host a reception for Dr. Jimmy Henning.  On December 6, the KEAFCS Business Meeting and Retiree Program will be 8:30 AM followed by the Awards Brunch at 10:00 AM.

Lora Lee has designed an FCS t-shirt which can be ordered on the registration form for $7.  You must return your registration form by the November deadline to order a shirt.

Each area is being contacted to provide an agent presentation for round-table rotation or a display on Dec. 5.  The Silent Auction will be held on December 5th and each area is asked to provide an item as well as any members who want to participate.  Items can be new, re-gifted, or gently used.  We would love to see some theme baskets from the areas. Don’t forget to invite your District Director to the Awards Brunch and send in a registration form for them.

Member Resources - Debra Cotterill

Member Resources is currently recruiting membership of new agents and those presently not members of KEAFCS/NEAFCS.  We ask all members to facilitate and support our efforts by encouraging all agents and associates to join our professional association.  The following is a top ten list of benefits to NEAFCS and our Kentucky affiliate that might help with recruitment.

   # 10. Travel across the state and nation seeing and touring historic and educational sites at the annual sessions.

   # 9.  Enhance personal and professional development in nutrition and wellness, financial security, and family and relationships.

   # 8.  Be recognized for your achievements through state, regional and national awards.

   # 7.  Demonstrate scholarship for promotion and tenure through your presentations, Journal articles, awards, and committee work.

   # 6.  Publish articles and research results in the Journal of the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, a refereed journal.

   # 5.  Present your work before a state and national audience of peers through workshops, displays, and poster sessions.

   # 4.  Develop leadership skills as you serve or lead state, regional, and national level committees.

   # 3.   Become inspired to replicate outstanding programs in your county or state.

   # 2.   Expand or enhance your programs with the latest research and technology.

And the number one reason to join NEAFCS/Kentucky Affiliate is;

Website & Newsletter- Mindy McCulley

Please remember that this newsletter is designed to focus on professional development and our professional accomplishments.  While family tidbits are interesting, they should not be the bulk of your area or district report.  It is okay to report nothing in the event that your district or area has not been overly active during the preceeding period.

This is the time of year when new people are taking on the position of newsletter chair for your area or district.  Please pay close attention to the calendar so that you will know when articles are due from your area to be included in the Spring or Fall edition.  Please take a little time to spell and grammar check, because I will publish the article exactly as it is submitted.  Remember, the Area/District section is for reporting on Professional Development Accomplishments, please make sure that your articles include something about the professional accomplishments of the colleagues in your areas.

Is there something you would like to see included in this newsletter or on the website that isn't?  Please share with me any comments or suggestions (mindy.mcculley@uky.edu)!  This is your newsletter and it is up to you to make it be the best that it can be.  Refer to the Calendar on the website for deadlines, but I will try to send you reminders!   Remember, any forms that need to be added to the website should be sent to me in Word format.

NEAFCS Dues Increase

During the NEAFCS Annual Session Business meeting a budget that included a $10.00 raise in National dues was presented and after some discussion passed.  Thus we will be paying an additional ten dollars for 2008 making the total to national $70.00 per member.  How that will effect what we pay at the state level will be determined at the board and annual meeting in December.

Mammoth Cave Area Extension FCS agents have spent this year in a series of professional development tours focusing on Agritourism in Kentucky.

For the first part of our series, we toured to scenic South Central Kentucky for the Cultural Heritage Segment of our series.  In Allen County, we were treated to a fantastic candle carving demonstration at the Quail Hollow Candle and Gift Shop, a temptingly tasty lunch was enjoyed at G-Pa's Pay Lake and Deli, and a tour of a basket making business at G&H Productions.

For the second leg of our series, we toured the Lost River Cave and Butterfly Habitat to focus on Natural/Environmental Tourism.  For this trip, we were joined by agents from the Northern part of our District in the Green River Area.  We also used this opportunity to bid a fond farewell to our dear friend and colleague, Ashlee Rzyczycki. (Ashlee has moved to Pennsylvania and is working for Ohio State Extension in Northern Ohio.  She can be reached by e-mail at rzyczycki.2@osu.edu.)

The final portion of our series will be completed in late October when we will focus on the Mainstreet Revitalization/Bed & Breakfast/Winery opportunities.  This tour will include a visit to the Bennett House in Richmond and the Acres of Land Winery.

Martha Yount is the mother of a 16 year old, we are still trying to figure out how this happened so suddenly.  It seemed like just yesterday that Hannah was selling Girl Scout cookies.  Martha and family are on a 3 week trip to Japan year.  Her husband Jim is anxious to show Martha and the girls where his ancestors lived.

Natasha Lucas has been busy trying to keep up with husband Joe and children Wyatt and Katie Beth.  The Lucas family are thriving at this time.  Natasha is looking forward to the new office that Owsley County is in the process of building.  They are working with an architect now – watch for new developments in this area.

Ann Hollon is the mother of 16 year old driver, Isaac.  Her daughter Rebecca attends cosmetology  school in Hazard..  Her husband Bobby is Pastor of First Church of God, they have a beautiful new worship center.

Glenna Wooten and husband Rufus are enjoying the empty nest years.  Their youngest daughter Monica is attending college at Morehead.  Glenna is the proud grandmother of grand dog – Jose.

Nanette Banks, husband David and daughter Noelle attended her first national meeting last fall.  They had a great time.  Nanette was brave enough to drive some of us to St. Paul , Minnesota for our national meeting.  She is an awesome driver and we appreciate her very much.

Ann Bradley has been busy visiting her niece and family in North Carolina .  Her family, like Martha’s have grown too quickly.  She also has a 16 years old driver in the family.  They have become teenagers before we were ready.

Linda Combs recently helped her son and his family move to Salem , KY.   Mark is  the new pastor at Salem First Baptist.  She misses having her family close.  Her grandchildren are growing rapidly.  Seth (the sweet natured one) stays active keeping up with big sister Cassidy (the Hoot).

The Lake Cumberland FCS Agents and the Lake Cumberland Cancer Consortium reached 9,514 persons directly with their “Sun Safety Skin Cancer “program this spring.  An estimated 40,000 people were also reached through the newspaper, radio, and cable TV about the danger and damage a person receives from the sun.    The FCS Agents worked with partners from the Lake Cumberland Health Departments, Dermatology Associates of Lake Cumberland; The American Academy of Dermatology, Center for Rural Development, Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, Somerset Community College, American Cancer Society, Kentucky Cancer Program, Hospice of Lake Cumberland and HEEL.  The Dermatology Associates of Lake Cumberland provided four skin cancer screening clinics in Pulaski, Russell and Wayne Counties for individuals not covered by health insurance

The Lake Cumberland FCS Agents hosted two luncheons in honor of HES Centennial Celebration.   Kim Henken not only brought greetings from the University of Kentucky , but also provided the delicious chocolates.   Adair and Wayne Counties were the sites for the luncheon with HES Graduates attending the event from most of the 10 counties.  A great time was enjoyed by all.  Many of the HES Graduates in attendance express interest in each county having their own HES Graduate luncheon in the future.
