Volunteer Leader
A 4-H
volunteer leader is like a parent who gives encouragement and direction,
provides discipline and counsel, and loves you. Volunteer leaders also are
pals who offer companionship, friendship, an ear to listen and support when
things look down.
Although
volunteer leaders are different in many ways, they have one thing in common:
a glorious twinkle in their eyes because they enjoy giving time to 4-H and are
rewarded with a sense of accomplishment and deep inner warmth. Volunteers learn
from associating with you, just as you learn from being around them.
They’re tireless muffin consumers, experts at removing knots from thread,
awesome coaches, and have no peers at talking for hours on the telephone or at a
favorite hangout.
You’ll
find volunteers everywhere—at judging contests, school enrichment programs,
club meetings, junior fair square dances, talent shows, 4-H camps and field
trips, to name just a few. A volunteer might be an artist making a float
for the parade, a veterinarian prescribing for an underfed animal, a camp
counselor or trip chaperone, a farmer helping with a crop or livestock project,
or someone to provide a shoulder to cry on when that dress that took hours to
make just won’t fit right.
Volunteers
always are willing to rise early in the morning and get home late at night.
And they have so much fun with boys and girls—the more the merrier.
We can’t do without 4-H volunteer leaders and could never repay the tireless hours and knowledge they share with our youth. Volunteers receive love and appreciation from 4-Hers for years to come, and hear an inner voice that says “a job well done” for all the skills taught and youth whose lives they’ve helped develop.
