Fall Festival Being Planned

Gallatin County loves a good party. Although fun can be found year-round, a lot of our summer and fall celebrations tend to move outdoors. A big event that your friends at the Cooperative Extension Service would like you to participate in is the Fall Pumpkin Festival. On Saturday, October 10th,   the second annual Fall Pumpkin Festival will be held at Riverfront Park. If your organization was already planning something for the weekend of October 10, why not join in the Pumpkin Festival activities?  Beginning with a parade through town at 3:00 p.m., the event will continue at the park with contests, food, art and crafts items for sale, the famous pumpkin catapult, games, music, a bonfire, and movie-in-the-park.

We would like individuals and organizations to be involved in the festivities by participating in the Pumpkin Fest Parade. Parade floats will be lined up and judged at the High School from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. with the parade beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Individuals can participate in the parade by joining the “Second Saturday” group as they lead the parade. People all across the state will join together the weekend of October 10 to show the nation that Kentucky is serious about improving its residents’ health and promoting physical activity. Watch this column for more details about “Second Saturday”.

We are also inviting all non-profit school clubs and other non-profit organizations to have a fundraising booth at the festival. It can be a game, a haunted house, a food, a craft or whatever type of booth you’d like. If it involves serving food, you are responsible for contacting the Health Department at 567-2844, ask for Sarah Biggin. All booths must be set up in the park prior to the parade, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The Gallatin County Community Arts will have a tent for local artists to sell their wares during the festival. Information and an application are available by contacting Rosie Allen at 567-5481. Application deadline is September 11. The Community Arts tent is sponsored by Mayme Walters. The Gallatin County Community Arts will meet on Monday, September 14 to discuss Fall Pumpkin Festival details.

A scarecrow contest is being planned, which is open to any resident of Gallatin County. There can be multiple entries from one household but only one entry per person in the following age categories: ages 12 and under, ages 13-18, and ages 19 and over. Scarecrows must be completed and displayed no later than October 7. The committee will drive to your address and take a photograph of each scarecrow on display. Photographs will be displayed for the public to view on October 10 and ballots will be available from 3-7 pm for People’s Choice awards. Top three People’s Choice scarecrows in each age division will be awarded a ribbon and a prize. If you would like to enter the scarecrow contest, applications are at the Extension Office (567-5481) and are due to by October 2.

Fall Pumpkin Fest and Second Saturday are all about celebrating our community here in Gallatin County. Of course, volunteers and prizes from local businesses are needed for these events. If you are interested in volunteering, donating a prize, donating pumpkins for the catapult, participating in the parade or setting up a booth or have any questions about Fall Pumpkin Festival, please contact the Extension Office at 567-5481, or see the links below for more information.
