Family Communication Toolbox

 

Due to the busy lifestyles of today’s families, family well-being is a major concern.  One of the key characteristics of a strong family is the ability to communicate. This topic was identified by the Regional Issues and Program Committee as being high priority in the region which resulted in a Family Communication Quick Response Team.

The Family Communication Quick Response prepared and sent a survey to county extension agents requesting information related to family communication issues in the counties in which they work.  The  Family Communication Quick Response Team reviewed the data from the surveys to determine the priority issues in which the team should focus.  The family communication topics on this site were identified as priority concerns of families in Kentucky.

The Family Communication Quick Response Team has the compiled resources agents can use in their county programs, included in the resources are publications, fact sheets, information releases, exclusives, UK CYFAR Library, CYFERnet and  links to other extension resources across the country.  Following are the topics and the resources which are available:

Working Families, Family Time and Communication 

Divorce, Single Parenting and Blended Families and Communication 

Communication about Family Crisis (death, illness, job loss, bankruptcy, emergencies, disasters, etc.)

Impact of Technology on Family Communication 

Intergenerational and Extended Family Communication (adult parent/child relationships, grandparents raising grandchildren, distance between family members, generation gap 

Culture and Family Communication (gender, ethnicity, differing backgrounds and experiences, etc.) 

Communication and Listening Skills  

Family Communications Resources from other State Cooperative Extension Service
