Biofuels in Kentucky
Renewable Energy: Ethanol
Objective:
Discuss the basic fermentation process for making ethanol from corn,
the amount of corn needed for energy compared to what is currently produced,
and the possibility of and obstacles involved with making ethanol from other
parts of the corn plant.
Materials needed:
- Slide set titled “ethanol-slides” in MS Powerpoint
(ethanol-slides.ppt)
or PDF (ethanol-slides.pdf) format. - Notes for slide set (ethanol-slides-notes.pdf)
- "Eat the Planet" demonstration (appleplanet.pdf)
Optional: Apple and paring knife
Preparation:
1. Familiarize yourself with the ethanol slides and the notes.
2. Review the Kentucky Ethanol Journey available at ces.ca.uky.edu/energy/biofuels/ethanol.
Presentation:
Present information to the class using slides and apple demonstration.
