There will be an Elliott County Fair Board meeting on February 14, 2012 at 5:00 pm at the Elliott County Extension Office.  Anyone and everyone who is interested in helping us grow the Elliott County Fair is invited to attend this meeting.  Spread the word.  Officer elections will be that evening.  If you have quetions call the office at 606-738-6400.
Strawberry orders are  being taken up at the Extension office. 25 plants for 4.25 Please call the office at 606-738-6400 to place your order.  Earliglow, Tribute, and Red Chief are the varieties.  The last day to order will be the 15th of February.  The order should be in the last week in March.

 

The Elliott County Agriculture Development Board would like to remind the recipients of 2011 CAIP dollars that your due date is approaching.  All receipts for those applicants that were approved in September 2011 your receipts are due on March 12, 2012 to the Elliott County Conservation Office.

 

2012 Invest In Youth

Are you interested in seeing your children involved in 4-H Livestock?  Would you like to see your child develop responsibility and a sense of pride?  Would you like to have more family time, while seeing your kids increase their physical activities? Then this could be the project for you. 

To participate Elliott County 4-H Livestock as a 4-Her they must be 9—18 years old as of January 1, 2012.  To participate as a Cloverbud they must be 5—8 years old as of January 1, 2012.  Club members don’t have to show an animal and are welcome to participate in educational activities to learn about animals.

Cloverbuds are only allowed to show a goat or a lamb and youth and parents must take care of the animal and have adequate shelter available for the animal.

 If you are interested classes will start on February 9 at 4:00pm at the Elliott County Soil Conservation Office.  At this meeting we will determine future meeting times.  Future meeting dates are March 3, March 8, April 12, May 3, June 7, July 12, and August 9.  Each participant must get 6 hours of education to participate in the show.  Meetings are very active and involve games and other activities to teach about sheep, goat, swine, and beef animals.  Elliott County Certified 4-H Livestock Volunteer Leaders are John Paul Skaggs and Mary Skaggs.  If you have any question please give the Extension Office a call at 606-738-6440 or check us out on facebook under Elliott County Extension ANR Programs.

2012 Family Home Gardening

The next family gardening series meeting will be on February 29, 2012 at 6:30 pm at the Elliott County Extension Office.  Dr. Shawn Wright will be presenting on the Three Gardening Seasons and How to Extend the Growing Season.  If you are interested in attending please call the office to sign up.   If you have any question please give the Extension Office a call at 606-738-6440 or check us out on facebook under Elliott County Extension ANR Programs.

 

Up Coming Forage Meeting

The meeting on April 12, 2012 will be on late season weeds and their control.  This should be a very informative meeting.  The meeting will be located at the Elliott County Extension Office at 6:00pm.  Everyone is welcome to attend

Emerald Ash Borer

Kentuckians are urged to identify ash trees on their property and to examine them for signs of EAB activity. Symptoms of infestation include dieback of the upper tree canopy, sprouts growing from roots and trunk, loose bark, signs of woodpecker activity, and D-shaped exit holes in the trunk. If you suspect that your trees may be infested, contact the Emerald Ash Borer Hotline (866) 322-4512 or the Office of the State Entomologist. (859) 257-5838.
