4-H Youth Development

4-H ACTIVITIES . . .
* Club Organization School, project, and community clubs organize and elect officers.
* Achievement Records and
    Honors Program
Youth will develop record keeping skills and will be recognized for their hard work.
* Poster Contest Youth express what 4-H means by using the skills of designing, drawing, or  painting.
* Officer Training 4-H club officers can participate in a workshop to help them become effective leaders.
* Entomology
    (Insect Collections)
Youth  learn proper insect collection techniques. UNIT 1: Collect and mount 10 insects -  identify; UNIT 2: Collect and mount 20 insects - identify
* Forestry (Leaf Collections) Youth learn necessity of trees in the environment.  UNIT 1: Collect 10 leaves; UNIT 2: Collect 20 leaves and identify by common name; use of wood; date, place, and county found; UNIT 3: Prepare leaf prints and display of leaf, stem and fruit.  Put on display board.
* Demonstration Contest Youth learn to organize and present information by demonstrating a skill.
* Issues Conference for teens to learn the process skills needed to carry out community programs.
* Arts & Crafts Workshop Youth learn to make a variety of functional and decorative projects.
* Breads Bake-Off Classes include: 4 cornmeal muffins, 4 plain muffins, 4 biscuits, 4 cinnamon rolls, ½ quick bread loaf, ½ yeast bread for entertaining, ½ ring bread from other lands, other breads (including mixes).
* Citizenship Focus A one-day program in which 8th grade students spend a day at the Clark County Court House to achieve a greater awareness of how local, county, and city governments operate.
* Speech Contest Youth learn to write, organize and deliver a speech effectively. Ribbons and awards are presented to participants.
* Talent Show 4-H members have opportunities for self-expression by sharing talent in singing, instrumental music, skits, and dancing.
* American  Private 
    Enterprise (APES)
Increase knowledge of the American economic system by individual and group study.
* Fashion Revue 4-H members develop poise and confidence by modeling their clothing projects.
* Babysitting Clinic Youth learn responsibility, safety, and first aid.
* Teen Conference Teens participate in a 4-day conference at U.K. for social, educational, and leadership programs.
* 4-H Camp Youth participate in a 5-day overnight camp.  Activities... boating; swimming; crafts; recreation; nature; and much more!
* County Fair 4-Hers exhibit projects.  Ribbons, trophies, and premium money are awarded.
* State Fair County fair champions may exhibit at the Sate Fair.  Ribbons and premium money awarded.
4-H PROJECTS . . .

     4-H projects are activities that youth accomplish with the assistance of an adult or teen.  When completed, these projects may be entered in the fair and record book competition.

     Workshops are offered in breads, foods, arts and crafts, electric, home furnishings, woodworking, shooting sports, geology, dog obedience, forestry, horse, cat, rabbit, horticulture, gardening, tractor, livestock and more.

     Choose projects based not only on your interest, but also on your ability to complete the project.  For example, to complete a wood science project, a few simple tools are needed; completing a photography project requires a 35mm camera.

CLARK COUNTY OFFERS THE FOLLOWING PROJECTS:
* Beef / Sheep / Swine / Goat Learn fitting, showing, and marketing.
* Horse

Learn all about horses, participate in parades, trail rides, etc.

* Dog Care Showmanship, obedience, confirmation, clinics, and year round club.
* Ham Curing "Hands On" experiences in the curing of country hams
* Forestry Learn tree and leaf identification. Make a leaf collection.
* Horticulture Includes gardening, lawn improvement, flowering plants, field crops, etc.
* Tobacco Raise, show and sell your own tobacco.
* Entomology Learn collection, mounting, display, and identification of insects.
* Poultry Learn basic care and showmanship techniques.
* Clothing Construct a garment from a pattern, model in fashion revue.
* Crochet Beginning crochet to advanced projects such as afghans.
* Communications Skills to involve show & tell, research, journalism, essays, and group discussion
* Foods Learn preparation, safety, and nutrition.
* Bread Learn the fine art of baking breads, compete in the 4-H Bake-Off.
* Food Preservation Canning and freezing vegetables and fruits.
* Knitting Beginning to advanced knitting projects such as sweaters.
* Creative Crafts Learn hand skills by making crafts and heritage items.
* Home Environment Make accessories for your home or living area.
* Photography Learn photography with a 35 mm camera.
* Electricity Make a trouble light or can lamp as well as other advanced projects.
* Woodworking Build a small project from a kit or design your own.
* Shooting Sports Learn firearm, archery, safety, and competitive target shooting
* Consumer Education Learn basics of being an informed shopper.
* Babysitting Learn skills necessary to be an informed and responsible sitter.
* Rabbits/Small Animals Learn to care for and show rabbits / pets.
* Veterinary Science Learn basic care of animals.
* Nature Studies Learn more about your natural environment, wildflowers, stream walks, bird watching, astronomy, wildlife, conservation.

PROJECT & COMMUNITY CLUBS INCLUDE:

§ HORSE CLUB Activities include monthly meetings, parades, trail rides, community service project, and fair events.
§ DOG CLUB Activities include monthly meeting, obedience trainings, confirmation, dog show, and community service.
§ LIVESTOCK CLUB Activities include seasonal meetings; raise steers, heifers, swine, sheep, llamas; show in county fairs and the state fair.  Learn livestock judging.
§ TEEN CLUB Activities include monthly meetings, retreat, senior conference, club trips, leadership, community service,  and fund raising.
§ RABBIT CLUB Activities include monthly meetings, health workshops, and competition.
§ SEWING CLUB Activities include safety training, clothing and non-clothing construction, and fashion revue.
§ SHOOTING SPORTS CLUB Disciplines in shotgun, rifle, pistol, muzzle loading, black powder, and archery.
