As dedicated volunteers, Boone County Extension Homemakers share their time and talents to enrich the lives in our community. Here are some of the projects BCEHA is proud to be involved in.
ScholarshipsEach year the Boone County Extension Homemakers sponsor four scholarships from the Mary Hood Lutes Scholarship Fund. All the funds for these scholarships are raised by BCEHA projects.
- $1000 Student Scholarship
- $1000 Extension Homemaker Scholarship
- $750 Extension Homemaker Scholarship
- $750 Technical/Associate Program Scholarship
Scholarships are also available on the area level and from KEHA. For more information about these scholarships visit the Reports & Forms page, email Katie Smallwood at Katie.Smallwood@uky.edu or call 859-586-6101.
Women's Crisis Center
The Women's Crisis Center gives aide to women and families in our community whose lives have been altered by violence. Each month one club collects supplies such as health and beauty aids to donate to the center. We also collect canned goods for the center during October which is World Food Month. This has been an ongoing project for BCEHA for many years. If you'd like to donate, contact Barbara Hammond at Mamalee@Isoc.net or call Katie Smallwood at 859-586-6101.
Baby Blanket Project
Several years ago, our Homemakers started a project of donating handmade baby blankets to the local hospitals for premature babies. This endeavor has grown and the members are now making caps, pillows for cancer patients, as well as blankets for the
homeless. Each month members gather at the Extension Center at a workshop to sew, knit and otherwise work their "magic." You don't have to have a particular skill to participatethey need people to cut and iron too! We also have members who work at home and donate their finished products to the cause. If you don't have the time to volunteer, the Homemakers can always use donations of yarn and material. If you'd like to participate or donate, contact Linda Padgett at 859-384-3912.
Pop Can Tab Project
Each year the Boone County Homemakers donate money to Indian Summer Camp, a weeklong camp for Kentucky children who have cancer. Indian Summer Camp uses aluminum can tabs as a fundraising mechanism. While many individuals save cans, they can take up a lot of space and are difficult to deal with. Saving just the pull tab is much easier. The tabs are sold as scrap metal and the proceeds used to help send the children to camp. All funding for the camp is either donated or earned through fund raisers. It costs approximately $500 for each child to attend camp. All counselors, physicians, and nurses volunteer their time for the weekthere is no paid staff. Through can tab collection, donations, and generous funding from the BCEHA treasury, $500 was donated to Indian Summer Camp to fund one child's week of camp last year. To donate to this project, contact the Boone County Extension Service at 859-586-6101. You can find out more about Indian Summer Camp by visiting their website at www.iscamp.org
