Russell Co. Community Garden Research & Development Project 2010
UK/KSU - Russell County Research & Development Community Garden Project - 2010
Wanda Miick is the Project Manager for the 2010 Garden Project. For more information about the garden project call our office at 866-4477 and ask for Wanda Miick or Raymond Thompson.
The Russell County Community Garden is up and growing next to the Russell County Cooperative Extension Office. Nine plots have been established with 13 families participating.
The field has been plowed, roots removed, plots fertilized, various plants and seeds planted, and the irrigation system installed.
The participants received instruction on proper fertilizing techniques, proper transplanting procedures, and planting various types of seeds. They learned what types of plants grow best grown in plastic versus in bare soil. They also assisted in installing the irrigation system. Instructions on how to operate the tiller and the importance of keeping the soil loose was also taught.
The Community Garden Project has been toured by two groups this summer. The first was the Russell County Twilight Tour which was open to the public - for Twilight Tour pictures, click here X. The second was a group of students and agents from the University of Kentucky.
Produce is being harvested now by the garden participants and much of the produce will be canned or frozen to be enjoyed this winter. Many of the participants have had training on safe food preservation.
Working with the families are Wanda Miick (Small Farm Assistant and Project Manager), E. Raymond Thompson (Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent), and Margie Hernandez (SNAP-Ed Assistant and Spanish Translator).
