Rinse & Return - A representative from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's Rinse and Return program will be at the Laurel County Extension Office on Tuesday, September 6, from 9 AM until noon to accept empty pesticide containers.  Containers must be triple rinsed.  For more information about the program or rinsing procedures, visit their Web site at www.kyagr.com.

Master Stocker Program - The Laurel County Extension Office is proud to announce that we will be hosting the Kentucky Master Stocker Program beginning on September 6 from 6-9 PM.  The Master Stocker program is an educational series that is open to any beef producer who is involved or interested in stocker cattle.

The program, which is funded through the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund and delivered by the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, includes eight classroom sessions and one field trip.  Aspects covered will improve the understanding of best management recommendations for stocker and backgrounding operations.

Sessions that will be offered in the series include:

  • Enterprise Budgeting and Cost of Production
  • Economic Risk Management Tools
  • Marketing
  • Forage Management
  • Health Management
  • Nutrition Management
  • Environmental Compliance and Best Management Practices
  • Animal Handling, Transporting, and Welfare

To complete the program, the producer must attend all eight sessions, have a valid Beef Quality Assurance Number, and have an approved Water Quality Management Plan.

The registration fee for the series is $50 per individual, which will offset the cost of dinner for all meetings and the workshop materials.

For more information or to register, contact the Laurel County Extension Office at (606) 864-4167 or visit or convenient online registration.

Cost-Share Applications Now Being Accepted - The Laurel County Cattlemen's Association will be accepting applications for the 2011 CAIP (County Agricultural Investment Program) cost-share program for two weeks, beginning on Monday, August 29, 2011, at 8 AM and continuing through Friday, September 9, at 4:00 PM.

The categories that are included in this year’s program include:

  •  Agricultural Diversification
  • Cattle Genetics Improvement
  • Cattle Handling
  • Commercial Poultry, Dairy & Swine
  • Farm Fencing Improvement
  • Farm Structure & Commodity Handling
  • Farmland Improvement & Utilization
  • Goat & Sheep Diversification
  • On-farm Energy Efficiency & Production
  • On-farm Water Enhancement
  • Technology & Leadership Development

Several changes have been made to the program guidelines this year.  Fertilizer and soil amendments have been returned to the list of eligible cost-share items, and there is a further requirement that each producer must select no more than three programs from the list and complete projects within those areas.  Additionally, the maximum cost-share funds that can be received by a producer for the 2011 program has been reduced to $2,500 to allow more projects to be funded. With all these new changes, it is highly recommended that producers review the guidelines thoroughly before submitting applications.

Applications and copies of the guidelines are available at the Laurel County Extension Office, but they must be returned during the sign-up period of August 29 through September 9. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but the office is closed from 12-1 each day for lunch.

Please note that this program is not awarded on a first-come first served basis.  Applications must be scored and approvals determined using the guidelines set out by the Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy.

For more information, call the Laurel County Extension Office at (606) 864-4167, or stop by our office at 200 County Extension Road, London, Kentucky.  Guidelines are also available from the Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy website at: http://agpolicy.ky.gov.

The 2011 Gardeners Toolbox Workshop classes have been a great success.  The next class, Seed Saving, is scheduled for Monday, September 12, at 6 PM.  Take a look at the schedule and reserve your place in the classes before they're full.
