Outdoor Education Center
The Kenton County Outdoor Education
Center (KCOEC) is located on Extension grounds and provides tools for hands-on environmental and life skill science education for both youth and adult visitors. Extension programs such as, Youth Day Camps, Agricultural and Horticultural Field Days, 4-H Environmental projects, and Group Exercise opportunities are offered at the Center. Currently the Center demonstrates several large produce garden plots, enabled gardening boxes, a season-extension greenhouse, and a Native Trees of Kentucky planting. Future plans include a one mile walking path for exercise programs, alternative energy and water catchment demonstrations, a “Planting Under Power Lines” municipal tree planting, and an antique farm machinery and Extension heritage showcase.
For program info please consult the Extension Calendar.
The County Extension Council Land Use Committee,
represented by community members, is facilitating the planning and building of the KCOEC. Extension volunteers, including Northern Kentucky Master Gardener Volunteers, also maintain and support the progress of the KCOEC. In spring 2011 we will initiate Phase II of the KCOEC project by building an outdoor classroom and storage building on the property. This building will also catch water run-off for our gardens!
We appreciate your interest and support, and welcome you to contribute by donating time and/or treasure in planning for the growth of the Center. Please contact Andrea Dee, andrea.dee@uky.edu, or Dan Allen, daniel.allen@uky.edu, if you have any questions about the KCOEC.
