Who We Are
Some people know us by our popular 4-H programs including 4-H camp
and school
programs. Others know us as agriculture experts from our
work with farmers,
producers and agri-business. Still others know us
from our publications on such
topics as horticulture and homemaking.
Sometimes people come to us for only one
program without discovering
that we offer a wide range of programs for young and
old, groups and
individuals, in rural and urban settings throughout Grayson
County.
Our name includes the University of Kentucky
(1996 and 1998 NCAA
National
Basketball Champions!) because we are UK's off-campus
information education
arm. Our county Extension Agents are UK staff
members, who work closely with
campus-based specialists. UK and other
land grant universities are centers of
research in agriculture, home economics,
youth, and rural and economic
development. Through our network of agents
and specialists, we translate
university research into practical, useful
information. We help you put that
knowledge to work on your farm and
your job, in your home and in your
community.
Cooperative: Means that federal, state (Kentucky) and (Grayson)
county
governments, and local citizens through advisory groups; cooperate to
plan, develop and finance educational programs. We enlist the support
of local
volunteers and leaders in planning and implementing our programs.
Extension: Means that we extend the university and its resources to
all
Grayson County citizens where they live and work. Through educational
programs we deliver information one on one or to groups. Our classroom
is
wherever we meet someone seeking information - in an office, a meeting
room,
at home or in the field. Extension brings you information through
direct mail,
demonstrations, tours, workshops, videotapes, satellites,
computer programs
and now via the Internet. We use newsletters and
other publications,
newspapers, radio, television and the telephone to
get our message to you. We
reach out to our clients, and we relay the
research and information needs of
local communities back to the campus.
Service: May be our last name, but serving people is our first
priority.
Through our educational program, we help people lead better, fuller
lives. Because our County Extension Professionals live and work in
our county,
we know the local people and their needs. We tailor
programs that best meet
those needs. We have programs on
Agriculture, Family & Consumer
Science, 4-H Youth
Development,
Horticulture and Rural
and Economic Development.
Educational programs of the Cooperative
Extension Service serve all people
regardless of race, color, sex, age, religion, disability, or national origin.
