Dear Friend,

You may not know us; we are the Extension Homemakers of Gallatin County. We would like to tell you about ourselves.

We are home makers who live in Gallatin County , and are involved in clubs sponsored by the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service . Our organization began in the 1940’s.

Today there are 7 clubs which have been formed somewhat, but not entirely, along geographical lines throughout Gallatin County . Each club meets once a month, September through May, either in a member’s home or in a public meeting room.

Many clubs are in involved with community projects or activities and use some of the money raised throughout the year to sponsor these efforts. We have supported H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People in Emergencies), Jamaican Computer Lab project, Ovarian Cancer Research program, Community Baby Shower, Relay for Life, 4-H Camp scholarships, Iraq service men care packages, Redifest for school, and the County Fair, to name a few.

At club meetings there is an educational lesson given by a club member using information from the University of Kentucky . These are timely, pertinent topics which have been voted on by club members. At the beginning of the month, each club selects a member to attend a  Learn With Us!  session where the educational lesson is presented. Taking and teaching a lesson encourages and enables leaders to realize their true potential by working within the group where they are comfortable among friends.

While education and leadership skills are important, perhaps the most wonderful benefits of Extension Homemakers are the fellowship and sharing that come about from membership.

In addition to monthly meetings, we are involved in other things in the community. Several times a year we offer educational classes which are open to everyone in the community. These vary from creative arts, such as making a “basket-of-the-month” to Fall Into Gardening, from Speedy Suppers to Building Assets in Today’s Youth.

We “Walk Away the Pounds” everyday, Monday through Friday, at noon during January and February. The Health Department offers Body Recall classes in the fall, which involves exercises while sitting in a chair. The Holiday Panorama renews our Christmas Spirit each November and the Tasting Bee raises funds that go to our scholarship fund for a college student. Our Homemaker year kick-off begins with an old-fashioned ice cream social in August.

You are invited to join Gallatin County Extension Homemakers. Dues are only $5.00 a year which includes a $1.00 donation to the Ovarian Cancer fund. Just call the office at 859-567-5481 for more information on the monthly club meetings listed below.  Or, if you would rather not become involved with a club, you are welcome to become a mail box member. While you miss out on the social and leadership opportunities, which club membership offers, you do receive the monthly lessons and newsletter by mail. Just complete the form below.
