The goal of the Family & Consumer Sciences Program is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families.  We address the challenges of critical issues affecting people's daily lives in a changing environment.  Programs focus on economic, social and physical well-being of our clients.  We strengthen personal and family relationships, encourage healthful choices, and identify resources to extend income.

We can also check your pressure canner dial gauge for FREE.  Just stop by the office.



 

 Desserts for the Diabetic will be May 10th at 6:00 p.m. at the Extension Office. Elaine Hacker from the Clay County Health Department and Lora Howard, County Extension Agent for FCS will be presenting the program. Call the Extension Office at 598-2789 to register. This program is FREE and open to the public. Everyone welcome!

 

 

The State Homemaker Meeting will be May 14-17th.

 


 T-Shirt Mania will be June 19th and 22nd. This program is for adults and children. On the 19th you will make a T-Shirt Scarf at 10:00 a.m. and a T-Shirt Tote Bag at 1:00 p.m. On the 22nd you will be making a T-Shirt Quilt and Headbands. You will need to bring at least 3 different color of t-shirts. Sessions are FREE but you must call 598-2789 to register.

 

 

♦Canning, Freezing and Drying Workshop  will be held on June 28th at 6:30 pm in the Extension Office meeting room.  If you have  extra fruit and vegetables, attend this workshop and learn how to preserve your food for this fall and winter. Bring your pressure canner lids and we will test the dial gauge.  You must call 598-2789 to register.  Cost is free.

 


Hawaiian food♦Taste of the World Day Camp for children in grades 3rd-5th, will be held July 11, 18, and 25 at Rawlings and Stinson Park from 10:30 am – 1:10 pm.  Your children will travel the world and learn about Japan, Mexico and Hawaii during the day camp.  Mexico will be on July 11th, Japan on July 18th and Hawaii on July 25th.  Youth will make a craft, exercise and be provided lunch.  The program is sponsored by the Clay County Extension Office.  Felisha Mitchell, SNAP Ed Assistant, Lora Lee Frazier Howard, Family & Consumer Science Agent, and Ashley Adkins, 4-H/Youth Development Agent will be present.  You must register by July 6th by calling 598-2789 if you plan on attending.  Cost is FREE!  Click HERE for flyer!

 

 

On July 16th at 1:30 pm we will be having a program on “Make A Neck Roll Pillow”.  This will be at the Extension Office meeting room.  We see more and more people with these as we travel, so now you can make your own.  You will need to bring your sewing machine and call the office at 598-2789 to register and for a list of supplies.

 

 

PhotographyPhotography Camp will be at the Rawlings & Stinson Park on July 19th, 20th, 23rd and 30th from 10:30 - 11:30 am for grades 6th - 12th. Participants will have opportunities to exhibit outstanding photography at the Kentucky State Fair 4-H Exhibit and the Clay County Homemakers Photography Show. ♦Christmas Now! Workshop  will be held July 23, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Extension Office meeting room.  We will start getting ready for the Christmas holiday in July this year.  Come, enjoy a day of fun and information.  Topics for the day will be a craft, budgeting, parties, etc.  More details will follow  in July.  You must call 598-2789 to register.  Free and open to the public.

 

 


Plate It Up Logo Plate It Up Cooking School will start on August 14, 2012 at 6 pm at the Clay County Extension Office. Plate It Up Recipes taste good and are healthy! This event will be a fun evening with others that en joy food and cooking! Each time you attend a Plate It Up Cooking School, you will be eligible for one of 4 cookbooks, a wii game plus one small door prize. Other Cooking School dates are: December 6th, February 7, 2013, April 11, 2013 and June 6, 2013. You MUST call 598-2789 to register. Cooking Schools are limited to 25 participants per session. cameraClay County Homemakers will have their annual Photography Show on August 29-31, 2012 at the Extension Office .  You can enter photographs on August 29th from 11:30 am – 6:00 pm.  Photographs will be displayed and open to the public for viewing on Thursday, Aug.  30th from 12-4 pm and Friday, Aug. 31st from 10 am - 3:30 pm.  Entry fee is $5.00 per picture.  Youth and Professional is encouraged to participate.  1st and 2nd place ribbons will be given in each category.  1st place Best of Show will receive $25.  2nd place Best of Show will receive $10. Professional is not eligible for Best of Show.

The Area Annual Homemaker Meeting will be held September 22 in Rockcastle County.


 

 Attention:  Clay County Homemakers!  Lora is in the process of scheduling special interest programs for the following year.  If you have a topic, suggestion or if you are willing to teach a program, let her know.  If you are willing to present a program, please let Lora Lee know.  Many of you have special talents that could be shared: crocheting, knitting, quilting or photography.  We are always looking for programming ideas!

Litter Essay Winners

Manchester Elementary Pride Club members received recognition from the Clay County Extension Office for their litter essays.  Members were Hannah Cooksey, Kaylee Mathis and Raegan Foutch.  Hannah and Kaylee received Honorable Mention and Raegan Foutch was the club/school Litter Essay winner.

Weight the Reality Series

Biggest Loser Participants

We had a very successful program this year with a total of 78 lbs. lost.  Congratulations to Vickie Bradshaw!   Vickie was our Biggest Loser winner. We really appreciate Tammy Pennington for presenting our last session of our Biggest Loser program.  Tammy has been an inspiration to many with her weight loss.  She offered words of wisdom and encouragement to the program participants.  Thank you, Tammy!

Hand Crafted Items

Local artists participated in the Spring Fling at the Extension Office.  These artists have beautiful hand-crafted items for sale.  Some of the items include:  jewelry, hand painted rocks, gourds and flower pots, Indian crafts, quilt tops, blankets, oil paintings, hand painted wood works, soaps, lotions and scrubs.  These items would make great gifts for special occasions such as, birthdays and Christmas.  For contact information for each of the crafters or to view some of these items click here!
